FOOD SERVER GUIDE
A consistent count, every meal
- Set up one ward and meal. Enter trays served and actual dish names. Use one collection session per server; avoid counting the same tray on two phones.
- Select one level per dish. Compare edible food remaining with its original serving. Choose “Not served” if the dish was absent from that tray.
- Record the tray. This adds the selected tallies together. Undo removes the most recently recorded tray.
- Finish and export. Review the counts, finish the meal and check that it says “Sent.” Export CSV when needed for Excel or Google Sheets.
Food remaining
- 0%
- Nothing left
- 25%
- One-quarter left
- 50%
- Half left
- 75%
- Three-quarters left
- 90%
- Almost all left; at least one bite taken
- 100%
- Entire serving left
- NR
- Served, but not assessable: spilled, shared or unclear
Exclude inedible bones, peels and packaging. Practise with standard servings alongside a dietitian before the pilot.
Checking coverage = trays with at least one valid food score ÷ trays served. All-NR or all-not-served trays do not increase checking coverage.
Estimated waste is calculated separately for each food category, weighted by its tally counts. It is not a weighed measure of total hospital waste. Plate waste alone does not establish why a patient did not eat.
Active and unsent meals stay on this device. Sent meals are stored in the department’s shared database. Open the app online once before using it offline. Keep the app open after reconnecting to send pending meals. Keep the laminated form available.
